Are Drugs and Surgery The Solution For Obesity In Kids?

An article on Associated Press started with the following: 

Children struggling with obesity should be evaluated and treated early and aggressively, including with medications for kids as young as 12 and surgery for those as young as 13, according to new guidelines released Monday.

What was shocking were the guidelines of “treated early and aggressively” with “medications for kids as young as 12 and surgery for those as young as 13“.

The article is titled “New guidance: Use drugs, surgery early for obesity in kids“. Initially, I thought this was a satire article or website but, to my surprise, it is the renowned Associated Press. The article is based on the publication from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

What happened to the old age saying “Go out and play outside“?

The recommendation by the Ministry of Health, Singapore is more sound judgment to tackle the rise of obesity in Singapore: Exercise and adopt Healthier diet.
