The recent Dave Chapelle show ‘The Closer‘ (October 2021) ruffled a lot of feathers. Intrigued, I had a look at the reviews of the stand-up show. Oh Boy! Was I in for a surprise when I checked the Rottentomatoes ratings between the ‘so-called critics‘ (10 Reviews: 40%) and ‘regular‘ audience (5000+ Reviews: 95%).
I also checked on Chapelle’s earlier show ‘Sticks and Stones‘ and, again, what a contrast between the ‘so-called critics‘ (19 Reviews: 42%) and ‘regular‘ audience (25,000+ Reviews: 98%).
If you thought that the difference was huge with Chapelle’s show, the documentary of Anthony Fauci, ‘Fauci‘ is an even larger yawning gap between the ‘so-called critics‘ (42 Reviews: 86%) and ‘regular‘ audience (500+ Reviews: 2%).
Where is the disconnect? Is the taste between the ‘so-called critics‘ and ‘regular‘ audience so different? Or is it only for selected (ideological) genres? Well, what do I know!
(The ratings for the shows and documentary are based on Rotten Tomatoes website and first accessed on 20 Nov 2021 and updated on 17 Mar 2026).
